Ghat stories
Steps that have watched centuries of arrivals and departures.
The ghats tell the stories of the river. The bylanes hold the stories of the city.
Every bylane that leads to a ghat holds a collective of stories. We gather them from boatmen, priests, weavers, chai-wallahs and the people who walk these lanes every day. Pick a collective. Read slowly.
Steps that have watched centuries of arrivals and departures.
Bells rubbed bright by thousands of hands, and what they asked for.
Lanes so narrow the sun arrives late and leaves early.
The boatman, the weaver, the chai-wallah, the dog who is also a local.
Same river, new stories, always. Sunrises that teach letting go.
Where the city eats standing up, and why it tastes better that way.
Many lanes, one city, a thousand stories. Hover a place to hear its name; tap it to read a little further. Walk more, discover more.
Social hotels in old houses, on lanes that end at a ghat. Beds, dorms, a courtyard open to the sky and a rooftop that looks at the river.
A four-level old house built around a brahmasthala, each floor named for a chakra. From Muladhara at the door to Sahasrara, the rooftop café.
Explore the houseWe are walking other lanes in other old cities. When one feels right, you'll read about it here first.
Small groups, early mornings, late evenings. Things we do with guests because we would do them anyway.
Row out before the city wakes, watch the ghats turn from grey to gold. Sunrises here teach letting go.
Not from a boat, not from a balcony. From the steps, with the crowd, the smoke and the bells.
Thatheri Bazar, the silk looms, the spice lane, a dog that is also a local. A resident walks, you follow.
Chai, the river below, and someone from the lane telling a story we haven't collected yet.
Bylane Collectives is a social hotel and a story archive, started in the old quarter of Varanasi. We take old houses on lanes that lead to the ghats, restore them lightly, and open them to travellers who like to walk.
The name is the idea. The ghats are where the city shows itself; the bylanes are where it lives. We stay on the bylane, and we collect what we hear there.
